Disciplines of Civil Engineering

Structural - design systems of structural members used to support loads for a specified public function such as bridges, buildings, dams, and bell towers.

Hydrology - the movement, distribution, and quality of water throughout the Earth, and thus addresses both the hydrologic cycle and water resources.

Transportation - planning and design for the safe and efficient movement of goods and people in a timely manner on highways, water, rail, subway, air, and pipelines.

Construction - managing the building of civil engineering systems from cradle to grave to include coordination between the owner, contractor, and designer.

Geotechnical - design foundation and earthwork systems to support soil itself and transfer loads from structures into the earth while limiting settlements.

Environmental - the application of principles from both science and engineering to improve the environment, to protect resources and to remediate polluted areas.

Surveying - measurements between physical features to include horizontal distances and elevation differences to determine property lines, lay-out buildings, and produce maps.
